The final rule for Stage 2 of Meaningful Use (“MU”) included an outline of the timeline for reviewing and publishing updates to the Clinical Quality Measure (“CQM”) specifications used in the EHR Incentive Program with the determination that the specifications should be updated more frequently than the rulemaking cycle for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs in order to ensure that specifications continue to be aligned with current clinical guidelines and to ensure that the CQM remains relevant and actionable within the clinical care setting.

ECRI Institute Publishes Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2013
ECRI Institute has released its list of the Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2013. The annual report is based on the prevalence and severity of incidents reported by health care facilities and information found in the Institute’s medical device problem reporting databases.
Meditech, FTI Cambio and HealthNET Settle Dispute with Methodist Hospitals
As reported by the Post-Tribune, Methodist Hospitals has settled a dispute with Medical Information Technology (MEDITECH), FTI Cambio and HealthNET related to the failed implementation of an electronic health record (EHR) sytem. House Republican Leaders Urge Halt to Stage 2 Meaningful Use Payments
Yesterday (10/4/2012), in a letter from House Republican leaders to HHS, House Republican leaders expressed serious concern regarding the Stage 2 Meaningful Use program and requested HHS to take the following action:
- Immediately suspend the distribution of incentive payments until universal interoperable standards are promulgated by HHS;
- Increase what is expected of Meangingful Users (e.g., increasing the utilization percentages established in the current Stage 2 rules);
- Eliminate the subsidization of business practices that block the exchange of information between providers.

How to Achieve Meaningful Use Stage 1
On July 23 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm EST, National eHealth Collaborative will host Robert Anthony of the Office of E-Health Standards and Services at CMS to give tips and tricks in a second program in the series on how to achieve Meaningful Use Stage 1. In this program, Robert will address hot topics and frequently asked questions related to Meaningful Use Stage 1 and will provide in-depth information on exchange of key clinical information as well as the new “hybrid” certification structure that allows eligible professionals to use both ambulatory and hospital EHRs for meaningful use.

2012 Summer Olympics Marks the First Use of EHR for US Olympians
The US Olympic team will be traveling to London this Summer with their usual delegation of equipment and support personnel; however, they will be missing thousands of pounds of customary travel companions- paper medical records.
For the first time, thanks to a partnership between the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and General Electric, over 500 US Olympic athletes will forgo reams of paper records in favor of digital records. Stage 2 Comments Are Due in 2 Weeks
Comments to the Medicare and Medicaid Program; Electronic Health Record Incentive Program-Stage 2 Proposed Regulations are due in two weeks. If you wish to make comments to these proposed regulations, they must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 7. Comments can be submitted electronically at www.regulations.gov. You can also submit written comment by mail, overnight mail, or hand deliver at the addresses set forth in the first page of the proposed regulations. The proposed regulations can be downloaded here.
